Hawkeyes Fall to Northwestern

March 10, 2013

EVANTSON, Ill. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to No. 18 Northwestern 7-0 on Sunday.

Iowa (6-5, 0-2) failed to gain the doubles point as Northwestern (15-4, 1-1) won 2-of-3 doubles matches. Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan picked up the lone victory in doubles play for the Hawkeyes defeating Kumar and Pasareanu of Northwestern, 9-8. Garret Dunn and Michael Swank fell in their doubles matches along with Joey White and Chase Tomlins.

The Hawkeyes had a tough time in singles play losing all six matches. Among the highlights, Hagan fell to a ranked opponent and Dunn fell in a close, three-set match.

“Northwestern proved that they deserve their high national ranking,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “We had a very good chance to win the doubles point, but couldn’t convert a couple of match points. In singles, many of our guys played very well, but couldn’t convert some key points. We opened the Big Ten season with two top national teams and I’m confident that things will get better soon.”

Iowa will travel to California next and take on the University of San Francisco on March 17.
