April 1, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team hosts Western Illinois on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. (CT) in their first mid-week contest at Duane Banks Field.

The meeting is the second between the two squads this season, as the Hawkeyes downed the Leathernecks, 7-3, on March 2 in Little Rock, Ark. Senior Matt Dermody picked up the victory, allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings, while sophomore Nick Hibbing pitched the final two frames to record the save.

Sophomore Jake Yacinich led the Hawkeyes at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Kris Goodman also had two RBIs, while going 1-for-3 at the plate.

Tuesday’s game will also be the second clash of the Brownlees. Iowa assistant coach Jim Brownlee will square off against his son, Ryan, a former nine-year Iowa assistant and current first-year Leatherneck head coach.

Freshman righthander Calvin Mathews will take the hill for Iowa. The Bloomfield, Iowa, native is 0-3 with a 5.51 ERA in five appearances, which includes four starts. Western Illinois will counter with freshman righthander Alex Doty, who is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA over 8 2/3 innings.

Western Illinois is 6-17 overall this season, but three of the team’s victories have come since March 16. The Leathernecks took 2-of-3 in a three-game series at Michigan on March 22-23.

The Hawkeyes are 9-13 overall after falling three times to No. 19 Indiana last weekend at Banks Field.

Tuesday’s game will be streamed live on BTN.com.
