Hawkeyes Set for Big Ten Tournament

UPCOMING ACTION
The University of Iowa women’s tennis team travels to Bloomington, Ind. this week to compete in the 2013 Big Ten Tournament. The tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday, with first-round matches beginning at 9 a.m. (CT) at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. Friday will feature quarterfinal matches beginning at 9 a.m., while Saturday will showcase the tournament semifinals starting at 9 a.m. Sunday’s championship match is scheduled for 11 a.m. Live match updates will be available on the Iowa women’s tennis schedule page.

TOURNAMENT SEEDS
Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin finished at 3-8 in Big Ten play, creating a four-way tie for the eighth seed. Based on the tiebreaking procedures, the Hawkeyes (10-12) earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament and will face the ninth-seeded Buckeyes (10-13), with the No. 1 seed Wolverines awaiting the winner.

SEABORNE SUPREMACY
In her first season on campus, junior Ruth Seaborne has started every match at the top of Iowa’s lineup. The London, England, native owns a 12-8 record at the No. 1 position and is currently ranked No. 96 in the ITA singles rankings. Seaborne is 4-5 against ranked opponents.

DYNAMIC DUO
Junior Ruth Seaborne and sophomore Morven McCulloch own a 17-5 record at the No. 1 doubles position. Iowa’s top doubles team is ranked No. 46 in the ITA doubles rankings.

SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
Iowa fell to Ohio State, 6-1, when they visited the Buckeyes earlier in the season. Shelby Talcott picked up a straight-set victory over Fidan Manashirova (6-3, 6-2) to record Iowa’s lone point at the No. 2 position. Entering the Big Ten Tournament, the Buckeyes have suffered four straight losses against Big Ten opponents. They finished the regular season 10-13 overall, and 3-8 in conference play.

SEEDS UNDER DOUGHERTY
Iowa’s No. 8 seed is its highest Big Ten Tournament seed since Doughtery’s first season on campus. The Hawkeyes went 1-1 as the No. 4 seed in 2010. Iowa beat No. 5 Indiana in the quarterfinals, 4-1, before falling to No. 1 Michigan, 4-1, in the semifinals. Iowa was seeded ninth in 2011 and 11th in 2012.
