IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Minnesota heavyweight wrestler Ben Berhow has joined the University of Iowa wrestling program as a volunteer assistant coach. The announcement was made Tuesday by UI head coach Tom Brands.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for me,” said Berhow. “Iowa wrestling is a prevalent program in our sport and I’m looking forward to working with coach Brands and the entire staff. It’s a good fit for me and I’m excited to get on campus and get going.”
“We’ve had our eye on Ben for a long time and we’re confident he’s going to be a positive addition to the program,” said Brands. “He fills a need and he fills it in a big way. We’re excited for him to get started.”
Berhow joins the Iowa staff after serving as an administrative assistant at Minnesota for two seasons. As a member of the Gophers’ staff from 2011-13, Minnesota crowned four Big Ten and two NCAA individual champions, including two-time NCAA heavyweight champion Tony Nelson.
Berhow joined Minnesota’s staff following a four-year career with the Gophers that included 78 wins and three national tournament appearances from 2008-10. He received the Minnesota Integrity Award his senior season and was honored with the Verne Gagne Scholarship/Leadership Award as a junior. He earned the Chris Berglin Most Improved Wrestler award after posting an 8-0 Big Ten record as a sophomore.
A native of Hayward, Minn., Berhow won the 2006 Minnesota state championship while attending Albert Lea High School. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2011.
