IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa wrestlers past and present compete this weekend in Stillwater, Okla., for the chance to represent the United States in a pair of international wrestling competitions.
Former Hawkeyes Phil Keddy, Brent Metcalf, and Ryan Morningstar compete in the U.S. World Team Trials on June 21-23 at Gallagher-Iba Arena on the campus of Oklahoma State. The Trials determine the U.S. representative at the 2013 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Sept. 16-22, as well as the U.S. national teams for the 2013-14 campaign.
All three former Hawkeyes compete in the men’s freestyle challenge tournament. Morningstar (74 kg) wrestles Friday, while Metcalf (66 kg) and Keddy (84 kg) compete Saturday.
The FILA Junior World Team Trials, featuring the nation’s best 17-20 year olds, are contested at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday. Current Iowa wrestlers Sammy Brooks (84 kg), Nathan Burak (96 kg), Topher Carton (66 kg), Thomas Gilman (55 kg), Alex Meyer (84 kg), Patrick Rhoads (74 kg), and Connor Ryan (66 kg) compete for the chance to represent Team USA in Sofia, Bulgaria, on August 13-18.
The ASICS U.S. World Team Trials has been declared an official event for Olympic Day 2013 by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Olympic Day is celebrated worldwide each year to promote the Olympic values and participation in sports across the globe, regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.
All-session tickets to the Trials are available through the Oklahoma State ticket office or at theworldteamtrials.com. General admission is $30 and reserved 200-level tickets are $50. Single session tickets will also be sold for the event.
