3 Hawkeyes Set for 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships

June 25, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Three University of Iowa swimmers — junior Grant Betulius, sophomore Mike Nelson and senior Emily Hovren — will compete at the 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials on June 25-29 in Indianapolis. The event is being held at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.

The trio will compete in five events at the Championships. Betulius will swim in the 50 and 100-meter backstroke, Nelson in the 50 and 100-meter breaststroke, and Hovren in the 200-meter individual medley.

The event serves as the qualification for the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, July 19-August 4, 2013. In order to qualify for the USA team for the 2013 FINA World Championships, swimmers must be one of the top two finishers in each of the Olympic events other than the 100 and 200 freestyle. The four highest finishers in the 100 and 200 freestyles will make the USA World Championship roster and the winner in each of the non-Olympic events will qualify.

Betulius, a Naperville, Ill., native was honorable mention All-American in three events at the 2013 NCAA Championships, earning the distinction in the 100-yard backstroke and as a member of the 200 and 400-medley relays. The junior is the Iowa record holder in all three events as well as the 800-freestyle relay.

Nelson, a native of Tempe, Ariz., posted an NCAA “B” qualifying time in the 100-yard breaststroke during his freshman season. His 100-breast time of 53.91 currently ranks fourth on Iowa’s all-time top performers list.

Hovren is a school-record-holder in three events — 200 IM and 200-free and 800-free relays — for the Hawkeye women’s team. The Normal, Ill., native posted an NCAA “B” qualifying time and school-record time in the 200-IM at the 2013 Big Ten Championships en route to a 13th-place finish.

The Championships will be streamed live stream at www.usaswimming.org.
