Cafone Named B1G Player of the Week

Sept. 24, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Natalie Cafone has been named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The weekly honor marks the second for the Hawkeyes in as many weeks, and the second accolade of Cafone’s career.

Stephanie Norlander became the first Iowa player to earn Freshman of the Week honors last week since Cafone earned the accolade on Oct. 23, 2012.

“Natalie had a very productive weekend,” said UI head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “Not only did she help us get on the scoreboard with goals, she helped set up numerous other scoring opportunities. She works hard whether we have the ball or not, and her energy is a big spark.”

The Fairfield, N.J., native earned the accolade after registering a hat trick and an assist in Iowa’s win at Kent State on Sunday. The forward became the first Hawkeye to record a hat trick since Aubrey Coleman on Sept. 9, 2012, in a 6-0 victory against Pacific in Stanford, Calif.

Cafone leads the Hawkeyes and ranks second in the Big Ten in goals (seven) and goals per game (0.88), and leads the team in total points (16).

Iowa (5-3) — ranked 14th in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA rankings — continues action Friday at No. 12 Northwestern in its conference opener. The Hawkeyes and Wildcats will meet at 2 p.m. (CT). The match can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
