MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa volleyball was swept by No. 25 Purdue, 3-0, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday night. With the loss, the Hawkeyes drop to 0-7 in Big Ten Conference play and 9-10 overall. The Boilermakers improve to 3-4 in conference action and 12-6 overall with the win.
Iowa and Purdue battled back and forth through six ties early in the opening set before the Hawkeyes used a trio of kills from Lauren Brobst, Alessandra Dietz, and Rachael Bedell to pull ahead 8-6. The Iowa lead held until a 10-point Boilermaker run swung the momentum into the opponent’s favor. Despite a late charge from the Hawkeyes that included three Brobst kills, an Erin Radke kill, an Alex Lovell kill, and an Erin Leppek ace, Purdue was able to close out the set one win, 25-18.
Kills from Radke and Lovell tied the second set up 2-2, but it was all Purdue from there. The Boilermakers did not surrender its advantage en route to their 25-14 win. Purdue out-hit Iowa .294 to .122. Bedell posted a team-most three kills in the set, followed by Brobst and Lovell who each contributed two.
Purdue jumped ahead in the third set outscoring Iowa 5-1, but the Hawkeyes clawed their way back to tie it up at 10 apiece. The scoring drive was fueled by three kills and a service ace from Dietz, a pair of Lovell kills, and a kill from Leppek. The Boilermakers regained composure with a three-point run to stall the Hawkeye offense and take hold of the momentum for the rest of the set. Purdue closed out the match, 3-0, and the set with a 25-17 win.
“Every one of their positions played better than every one of our positions,” head coach Sharon Dingman said. “It’s tough to win when that happens. It’s a tough night when that happens.”
Pacing the Hawkeye offense notching eight kills each, were Brobst, Bedell, and Lovell. Brobst hit a team-high .412, while Dietz posted a .400 hitting percentage. Nikki Dailey dished out a team-most 12 assists, and Bethany Yeager led the way with 12 digs.
