No. 21 Hawkeyes Set For Pair Of Conference Duals

The No. 21University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team travels to West Lafayette, Ind., for Big Ten Conference duals against No. 10 Ohio State and No. 22 Purdue. The meet will be held at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center beginning at 3 p.m. (CT).

The meet captains for Friday’s dual are seniors Kyler Noser and Tyler Lentz, along with junior Grant Betulius.

HAWKS FALL TO GOPHERS IN CONFERENCE MEET
The Hawkeyes fell to Minnesota, 176-121, on Nov. 1 in a conference dual meet at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The team won five events on the evening, taking its record to 1-2. Iowa got off to an exciting start in the opening race, swimming to a victory in the 200-medley relay. The quartet of Grant Betulius, Andrew Marciniak, Dustin Rhoads, and Gianni Sesto out-touched Minnesota by eight one-hundredths of a second (1:28.63). Sophomore Roman Trussov led the way for the Hawkeyes individually, posting a pair of NCAA `B’ cut times in the 100 and 200-breaststroke events.

SCOUTING PURDUE
The Purdue University men’s swimming and diving team enters the meet ranked 22nd in the CSCAA top 25. The Boilermakers posted a 208-92 victory over Notre Dame on Nov. 1, while taking first out of seven teams at the Indiana Intercollegiates. Purdue is led by senior Danny Tucker, who has won all four individual events that he has raced in this year. Layne Rogers has posted five victories on the season in the events. This is the first time Purdue is hosting Iowa in a head-to-head dual since 2002.

SCOUTING OHIO STATE
Ohio State enters the meet ranked 10th in the CSCAA top 25, and eighth in the collegeswimming.com top 25. The Buckeyes are a perfect 5-0 in dual competition this season. In the diving well, the Buckeyes are led by Christian Holstein, who was named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Nov. 5, after posting an NCAA Zone Diving score of 382.20 to take the 3-meter title in the Buckeye’s last meet. Fellow teammate Stephen Ettienne earned the distinction on Oct. 28.

HAWKEYES IN THE RANKINGS
The Hawkeyes are ranked 21st in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, released Nov. 6. The Hawkeyes are one of eight Big Ten programs ranked in the top 25. Joining Iowa is Michigan (1), Minnesota (7), Indiana (8), Ohio State (10), Penn State (20), Purdue (22), and Wisconsin (23).

Iowa is also ranked 14th in the collegeswimming.com top 25. Along with Iowa, Michigan (2), Minnesota (7), Ohio State (8), Indiana, (15), Penn State (20), and Wisconsin (23) appear in the top 25. The rankings are based on the teams’ top performances over the proceeding month.

NCAA `B’ CUTS
Sophomore Roman Trussov recorded two NCAA `B’ cut times in the Hawkeyes’ dual meet against Minnesota on Nov. 1. Trussov won the 100-breast in 54.37, besting his previous `B’ cut time he recorded at the Intrasquad meet, while touching out in 1:59.19 in the 200-breast for his second NCAA `B’ cut of the meet. Senior Dustin Rhoads joined Trussov with a `B’ cut time, finishing in 48.42 in the 100-back to claim the third `B’ cut time of the year for the Hawkeyes.

HOLLIDAY HAS BREAKOUT MEET
Sophomore Charles Holliday had his best meet of his collegiate career Oct. 18 against Michigan State, posting three first place finishes to go along with one second place time. Holliday sprinted to the 50-free (20.90) and 100-free (46.34) titles, was a member of the 400-free team that took the top time of 3:04.05, while taking second in the 200-medley team (1:31.48).

BOSCHULT DIVING TO THE TOP
Sophomore Addison Boschult posted a pair of victories in the Hawkeyes’ win over Michigan State on Oct. 18. Boschult tallied 293.70 points in the 1-meter and 311.55 points in the 3-meter to take the top spots. The score of 293.70 marks a season best for the Omaha, Neb.,native.

TRUSSOV EARNS B1G SWIMMER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Sophomore Roman Trussov was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 5. The Kazakhstan native swam four events against the Gophers, winning two individual events, while placing second and third in a pair of relays. The Swimmer of the Week honor is the first of Trussov’s career and Iowa’s first honoree since 2011. Last season he was selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Nov. 6.

HAWKEYES SET WORLD RECORD
Iowa swam to a World Record in the 200 short course meters mixed-medley relay at the Michigan Water Carnival. In the second-to-last event, the Hawkeyes swam to a World Record time when seniors Dustin Rhoads and Andrew Marciniak, junior Haley Gordon and sophomore Olivia Kabacinski finished with a time of 1:47.61. Iowa also bested a previous World Record time in the mixed 200-meter freestyle relay when sophomore Jackson Allen, senior Gianni Sesto, freshman Emma Sougstad and sophomore Allie Orvis posted a time of 1:40.26. Michigan took down the old record, finishing in 1:36.78.

ZITO EARNS B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS
Freshman Nick Ztio was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Oct.1. Competing in his first collegiate dual at defending national champion Michigan, Zito swam four events for the Hawkeyes, placing second twice, third, and seventh. In the 200-yard breaststroke, the Lombard, Ill., native placed second (2:02.10), behind fellow teammate and NCAA qualifier Roman Trussov. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Zito swam the anchor leg, touching out in 3:03.27. He also placed third in the 200-yard IM in 1:54.56, and placing seventh in the 200-yard freestyle.

RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS
The men’s squad returns junior Grant Betulius and senior Andrew Marciniak who earned All-America recognition last season. Betulius earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 100 back as well as being a part of the 200 and 400 medley relays. Marciniak was also a member of both medley relays. Iowa also returns NCAA qualifers David Ernstsson and Roman Trussov. Ernstsson swam in the 800-free relay, while Trussov finished 24th in the 200-breaststroke.

RECORD BREAKING YEAR
The Hawkeyes are coming off a 2012-13 season where nine records were broken. Individually, Grant Betulius (100 back – 46.33), Byron Butler (200 back – 1:43.59, 100 fly – 47.05), Andrew Marciniak (100 breast – 53.59), Roman Trussov (200 breast – 1:55.84), and Tyler Lentz (200 IM – 1:46.15) all captured school records. Jordan Huff, David Ernstsson, Gianni Sesto and Betulius broke the record in the 800 free relay (6:26.79). In the 200 medley relay, the record was broken by Betulius, Korey Schneider, Butler and Huff (1:25.82). The quartet of Betulius, Marciniak, Butler and Huff broke the record in the 400 Medley Relay (3:09.66).

ACADEMIC HONORS
One member from the 2012-13 men’s team was named to the Scholar All-America First Team while two other members were named honorable mention. Byron Butler was named to the first team after being an honorable mention selection in 2011-12. Joining Butler were teammates Dustin Rhoads and Manuel Belzer. For Belzer, it is his second consecutive year earning honorable mention recognition, while Rhoads earned the distinction for the first time. The team was recognized as a CSCAA All-America Team for the third time in program history.

HEAD COACH MARC LONG
Marc Long is in his 10th season as head coach for the University of Iowa swimming team. It’s his eighth as head coach of the combined program. During his tenure as head coach of both programs, 75 school records have fallen and 112 Hawkeyes have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.

COACHING ADDITIONS
Brandon King is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Iowa swimming and diving program. King joins the Hawkeyes out of Naperville, Ill., where he served as a senior assistant coach alongside decorated head coach Dave Krotiak for the Fox Valley Swim Team from 2011-13. During his time with the program, King assisted the Illinois Senior Coach of the Year and coached multiple swimmers competing at the Junior Nationals, Grand Prix meets and Olympic Trials.

CAMPUS RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTER
Ground was broken for the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in October 2007. The facility opened in August 2010 and is home for the Hawkeyes. It is located at the corner of Burlington and Madison streets and cost approximately $69 million. The facility includes a 50-meter competition pool, a separate diving well, a leisure pool with lap lanes and 24,000 square feet of fitness space.

IOWA SWIMMING AND DIVING TRADITION
Iowa was one of the first schools in the nation to compete on a collegiate level and competed at the first NCAA Championship. From 1937 to 1960, Iowa placed in the NCAA top 10 18 times, crowning nine NCAA and 22 Big Ten champions.

NEXT EVENT
The Hawkeyes return to action Dec. 6-8 in Iowa City, Iowa, for their annual Hawkeye Invitational. Iowa will be hosting Denver, Milwaukee, and Notre Dame. The competition will take place all day at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
