AMES, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Kevin Lewis earned NCAA All-Region honors at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday afternoon. The meet was held at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa.
The Hawkeye men finished 14th out of 29 teams with a team score of 370. Lewis earned All-Region honors when he crossed the 10,000-meter line in a personal-best time of 30:47.84. The junior finished 15th overall. Redshirt freshman Nate Ferree finished 76th with a time of 32:04.74, while sophomore Caleb Wilfong (32:06.14) and Ben Witt (32:06.84) finished 81st and 82nd, respectively. Freshman Kevin Docherty (32:42.94; 123rd) rounded out the scoring for the Hawkeyes.
“Kevin Lewis’ all-regional performance was the highlight of our day and of our season,” said men’s head coach Larry Wieczorek. “He is an outside shot for an NCAA spot, but regardless, it was still a tremendous performance for him personally.”
The Iowa women’s team finished 21st out of 30 teams with a team score of 512. Iowa’s top four finishers clocked personal-best times. Shannon Maser was first Hawkeye to cross the line. The senior clocked a 6,000-meter time of 21:49.23 to finish 66th. Sophomore Courtney Martin followed close behind, finishing 77th with a time of 21:51.58. Freshman Katie Adams (21:59.83) and sophomore Rachel Price (22:35.48) finished 92nd and 136th, respectively, while freshman Tess Wilberding (22:53.63; 153rd) rounded out the scoring for the Hawkeyes.
“I thought we competed hard,” said women’s head coach Layne Anderson. “We had some solid performances from our top three.”
