ST. CHARLES, Mo. — Thomas Gilman defeated Oklahoma State’s Edward Klimara, 5-2, to win the 125-pound Gold Division title at the Joe Parisi Open on Saturday.
Gilman, a redshirt freshman, earned a spot in the finals by defeating another Cowboy, Austin Miller, 7-5, in the quarterfinals, and topping Missouri’s Barlow McGhee, 3-1, in the semifinals. The tournament championship is Gilman’s first this season, and the third of his career.
Redshirt freshman Sammy Brooks earned a pair of falls and an overtime victory before dropping a 2-1 decision in the 184-pound finals.
Redshirt freshman Topher Carton and sophomore Brody Grothus rebounded from a pair of quarterfinal defeats to win the consolation bracket of their respective weights. Carton recorded a pair of falls and a 5-1 mark to place third at 141 pounds. Grothus recorded three pins and a 6-1 mark to place third at 149.
Redshirt freshman Phillip Laux won the 125-pound title in the Black Division (freshmen/sophomores). Laux went 5-0 with three pins to improve to 9-0 this year.
