IOWA CITY, Iowa — Forty-nine University of Iowa student-athletes have been named to the 2013 Big Ten Fall Academic All-Conference team. The list includes student-athletes from football (14), women’s soccer (nine), field hockey (nine), volleyball (nine), women’s cross country (four) and men’s cross country (four).
The nine honorees for the UI volleyball program ties a school record that was established in 2008.
The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 874 fall sports athletes. The list includes 74 field hockey players, 270 football players, 79 men’s and 142 women’s cross country runners, 81 men’s and 153 women’s soccer student-athletes and 75 volleyball players.
Twenty of these student-athletes have maintained unblemished GPAs. Two of those honorees are Iowa’s Sarah Mazur and Jocelyn Todd. Mazur, a sophomore on the women’s soccer team from LeGrange, Ill., is majoring in engineering, while Todd, a redshirt sophomore cross country runner from St. Louis, is studying biomedical engineering.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten, student-athletes must be letterwinners and be in at least their second academic year at the institution. They must also carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
