IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa wrestling program announced Tuesday that Ed, Lou, and Steve Banach will serve as honorary captains Friday when the Hawkeyes host Oklahoma State on Mediacom Mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Banachs combined for five NCAA titles while competing for Iowa from 1980-83. Ed was a three-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American, and his 73 career pins are a school record. Lou won national titles in 1981 and ’83, and placed third at the NCAA tournament in 1982.

Steve was a three-year letterwinner at Iowa from 1980-82 after transferring from Clemson following his freshman season. He graduated from Iowa in 1983 and was a member of the 1984 All-Army Wrestling Team.

All three brothers qualified for the 1984 United State Olympic Trials. Ed and Lou won their respective 198 and 220-pound weight classes and went on to win gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Banachs will be recognized prior to the start of the dual meet. Start time is 7:07 p.m. (CT). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance and use the “print at home” option for easiest entry into the arena. The match will be televised on Mediacom.
