IOWA CITY, Iowa –University of Iowa senior outfielder Taylor Zeutenhorst has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office. The honor is the first of Zeutenhorst’s career.
The Sheldon, Iowa, native earned the accolade after hitting .412 with a .500 on-base and .765 slugging percentage in leading the Hawkeyes to a 4-0 record at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. Zeutenhorst also scored six runs and had four RBIs during the weekend sweep.
Zeutenhorst tied a career-high by going 4-for-6 in a 16-6 rout of Ball State where he belted a two-run home run, while finishing with two RBIs and three runs. He tallied his second multi-hit game of the weekend when he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a 7-1 triumph over Nebraska Omaha in the finale. Zeutenhorst also had a triple and two runs in the opening 9-4 victory over Mississippi Valley State.
Zeutenhorst has reached base safely in all seven games this season, where he is hitting .357 (10-of-28) with 11 runs and nine RBIs — two figures that rank second in the Big Ten. Zeutenhorst is second on the team with two home runs — a career-high — and he is slugging .679, while reaching base at a .500 clip.
Zeutenhorst is the first Hawkeye to earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors since Mike McQuillan on May 21, 2012.
The Hawkeyes, who at 6-1 are off to their best start since 1985, return to action Friday at the Stetson Invitational in Deland, Fla. Iowa opens play against the host Hatters at 6 p.m. (CT).
