BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — It was a night of upsets in college men’s basketball Thursday, and No. 20 University of Iowa was among those toppled.
Of six ranked teams in action across the country, No. 7 Louisville was the only team to survive. Both ranked teams in the Big Ten Conference fell: Penn State defeated No. 22 Ohio State, 65-63, and closer to home, Indiana knocked off the No. 20 Hawkeyes, 93-86, in Assembly Hall in front of 17,472.
Iowa committed 18 turnovers, its most since having 27 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff 15 games ago.
“You turn it over 18 times and we don’t throw the ball inside in the second half,” UI head coach Fran McCaffery said. “We tried to do it all at once. We started quick-shooting the ball and driving into packs of people.”

A 6-foot-7 bright spot for the Hawkeyes (19-9 overall, 8-7 Big Ten) was the return of Melsahn Basabe to the lineup after missing two games with stomach flu. Basabe scored two field goals as Iowa grabbed an 8-0 lead 90 seconds into the game. He finished with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
“I don’t think he was 100 percent physically,” McCaffery said. “He gave us everything he had, he ran the floor, he posted hard, he scored. He was terrific, but defensively and on the glass he is typically way better than he was tonight.”
Indiana improved to 16-12, 6-9 begin a career-high 30 points in 30 minutes from Will Sheehey.
The Hawkeyes expended a lot of energy in the first half as they grabbed a 52-49 lead at the break while shooting 59 percent from the field. They couldn’t hold that pace over the final 20 minutes, making just 11-of-30 field goals (36.7-percent).
With 14 points, Basabe was one of three Hawkeyes to score in double figures. Roy Devyn Marble scored 20 points (8-of-16 from the field); Aaron White contributed a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He was 6-of-8 from the field and 7-of-10 from the line.
Not only did Marble lead the team in points, but he added five assists, three steals, and no turnovers in 36 minutes.
“What can you say about the guy? He was fantastic,” McCaffery said. “He was under control, he played both ends of the floor. He is playing as well as anyone in the league, no question.”
The Hawkeyes won the battle in the paint, 52-42, with 36 of those points coming in the first half.
Iowa returns to Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday to play Purdue (15-13, 5-9). Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT). The Hawkeyes are 12-3 at home this season.
“No panic, we’ll stay together, keep working and be positive,” McCaffery said. “I believe in these guys, we have character in that locker room and we’ll come back in a big way, no question in my mind.”
