March 11, 2014

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Iowa diving team was back in the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Tuesday for the second day of the 2014 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships. Tuesday featured the men competing on the 1-meter springboard while the women dove off the 3-meter springboard. Redshirt Junior Abby Grilli paced the team to an 11th place finish for the women.

“Today was another great day of competing for the Hawkeyes,” said UI diving coach Todd Waikel. “Brandis had a lifetime best and Abby just missed qualifying for NCAA’s. I look forward to our divers who are competing up on the tower tomorrow.”

Grilli qualified for the finals in 10th place, accumulating 317.00 points. In the finals, Grilli scored 307.25 points over six dives for a cumulative score of 624.25 and an 11th place finish. Fellow redshirt junior Joelle Christy fell just short of qualifying for the 18-person final during prelims, finishing in 21st with 274.15 points.

Freshman Brandis Heffner just missed out on qualifying for the finals of the men’s 1-meter competition, finishing in 19th place with 314.30 points, a new season-best. Sophomore Addison Boschult came in 22nd during qualifying, finishing with 311.75 points.

Both the men and women will wrap up the three days of competition Wednesday, with both teams competing on the platform. The women will begin qualifying at 10:30 a.m. (CT), with finals taking place immediately following, while the men begin qualifying at approximately 12:45 p.m.
