Hawkeyes in 2nd after Day 1 of Thunderbird

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team stands in second place after day one of the Arizona State University Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday.

The Hawkeyes posted a 278 (-6) in their first round, trailing host school Arizona State in the overall standings by seven strokes.

Junior Brian Bullington and sophomore Voramate Aussarassakorn propelled the Hawkeyes on the first day, both posting rounds of 68 (-3). Bullington and Aussarassakorn are currently tied for sixth place individually. The duo trail overall leader Jon Rahm of Arizona State by six strokes.

Senior Steven Ihm and freshman Raymond Knoll carded rounds of 71 (E), and are currently tied for 22nd individually. Ihm carded five birdies, the most of any Hawkeye on the first day, while Knoll led Iowa with 13 pars.

Junior Ian Vandersee posted a 73 (+2) on Friday, and is currently tied for 44th place individually.

“We got off to a solid start and were able to keep pushing for birdies today in good conditions,” said head coach Mark Hankins. “Arizona State shot a great round today and we can’t control that. We will continue to go about our business, stay in the present and work to achieve our goals.”

The Hawkeyes resume play tomorrow, teeing off the second round from 11:30 a.m. to 12:06 p.m. (CT).
