IOWA CITY, Iowa –University of Iowa junior Sasha Kuebel has been named the Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office. The honor is the second of Kuebel’s career.
Kuebel shared the award with Ohio State’s Greg Greve.
The St. Louis native earned the distinction after notching two wins and posting a 0.62 ERA last week, picking up a midweek victory against Kansas before throwing a complete game shutout against Northwestern on Saturday.
Kuebel threw 5 2/3 innings in relief in Iowa’s 5-3 victory over the Jayhawks, allowing one run and striking out six. In the second game of an April 12 doubleheader at Northwestern, Kuebel scattered eight hits and had six strikeouts against one walk in a 5-0 Hawkeye victory. It was Kuebel’s first career complete game shutout and the first by a Hawkeye pitcher since 2011.
The southpaw was previously honored as the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on May 21, 2012.
Kuebel is the fourth Hawkeye to earn a weekly honor this season, joining Player of the Week selections Taylor Zeutenhorst and Dan Potempa and Pitcher of the Week Calvin Mathews.
Iowa (20-13) returns to action Tuesday, hosting Western Illinois at Duane Banks Field beginning at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
