Metcalf recorded three technical falls and outscored his opponents 39-0 to win the 65 kg/143 lbs. bracket and earn his first U.S. Open title. He defeated Kellen Russell, 9-0, in the championship round to earn an automatic berth in the finals of the U.S. World Team Trials in Madison, Wis., on May 31-June 1.
Metcalf will be joined in Madison by Hawkeye Wrestling Club Members Matt McDonough (61 kg/ 134 lbs.), Phil Keddy (86 kg/189 lbs.), and Micah Burak (97 kg/213 lbs.). McDonough placed fourth at the U.S. Open. Burak placed fifth and Keddy placed sixth.
Redshirt freshman Topher Carton was runner-up at 63 kg/138 lbs. at the Junior National Championships. Carton scored three technical falls en route to the finals, where he was defeated by top-seeded Joseph McKenna, 10-0.
