IOWA CITY, Iowa —. Three University of Iowa Hawkeye football players were named to the 2014 Rotary Lombardi Award preseason Watch List, announced today by the Rotary Lombardi Award committee. Austin Blythe, Carl Davis and Brandon Scherff were each named to the list, which includes 123 athletes from 76 universities. The trophy is awarded to the best linemen or linebacker in college football. Past recipients of the award have included Aaron Donald (Pittsburgh), Manti Te’o (Notre Dame) and Luke Kuechly (Boston College).
The candidates earned a place on the preliminary watch list by earning All-American honors, being named to their respective all-conference teams or receiving 2014 pre-season honors.
As a sophomore last season, Blythe, a 6-foot-3, 290 offensive linemen, started all 13 games at center and garnered honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. On 10 separate occasions, Blythe played every offensive down as Iowa posted an 8-5 record after competing in the 2014 Outback Bowl. Blythe was also named to the 2014 Rimington Award preseason Watch List.
Davis, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound senior defensive tackle, garnered second team All-Big Ten honors from league coaches last season following a 2013 campaign that was highlighted by a combined 42 tackles. Looking to carry over the success found in 2013, the senior from Detroit, Michigan, has gathered preseason notice. Davis was also named to the 2014 Bednarik Award preseason Watch List and the 2014 Outland Trophy preseason Watch List.
Scherff, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound senior offensive lineman, started all 13 games at left tackle a year ago. Scherff was the recipient of the team’s Roy. J. Carver Offensive Most Valuable Player and Team Hustle awards last season. Scherff was also added to the 2014 Outland Trophy preseason Watch List. The 45th Rotary Lombardi Award presentation will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at the Bayou Music Center in Houston, Texas. For more information, visit rotarylombardiaward.org.
