IOWA CITY, Iowa — Incoming University of Iowa men’s tennis freshman Stieg Martens continued his summer competition at another premiere event in Belgium last week.
Martens, competing in the ITF Circuit Event in Ostend, advanced to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles action. The native of Roeselare, Belgium, beat Fabian Van Der Lans (ATP ranking No. 1,140) 6-2, 7-6 (1). He followed up that performance with a win over James Junior Storme (ATP ranking No. 1,737) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Martens ultimately fell to Alexandre Folie (ATP ranking No. 1,162) 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, Martens was paired with Jonas Merckx and the dup fell to De Goeijen/Hill in a tight match, 7-5, 3-6, 11-9.
Stieg earned two ATP Singles points for advancing to the quarterfinals of the main draw — the first of his young career.
Earlier this summer, Martens advanced to the semifinals of an ITF Pro Circuit Future Event in De Haan, Belgium. He was also reached the Round of 16 in doubles competition at the Belgium Future #8 tournament.
