EVANSTON, Ill. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team was swept, 7-0 by Big Ten opponent 27th-ranked Northwestern on Saturday. This is the Hawkeyes fifth conference loss since they beat Nebraska, 4-3, on March 29.

Iowa struggled to find a rhythm in doubles play as senior Morven McCulloch and junior Annette Dohanics were defeated, 8-4, by No. 42 duo Alicia Barnett and Erin Larner at the No. 1 position. At No. 3, Aimee Tarun and Shelby Talcott were shut out, 8-0, by Northwestern’s Lok Sze Leung and Alex Chatt. Freshmen Zoe Douglas and Anastasia Reimchen were trailing Wildcats Doshi and Rischbeith, 7-3 when the match was abandoned.
After earning the doubles point, Northwestern continued to gain momentum and swept Iowa at all six singles positions.
McCulloch and Reimchen were both defeated, 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the lineup by Alicia Barnett and Erin Larner, respectively. At the No. 3 slot, Dohanics made the contest close for Lok Sze Leung, but was ultimately beat out, 7-5, 7-5.
The bottom half of the Hawkeye lineup continued to struggle against the Wildcats. At the No. 4 position, Douglas took on Alex Chatt and was defeated 6-4, 6-2. Douglas is 4-3 in singles play against conference opponents. Senior Katie Zordani struggled to find success against Brooke Rischbeith at the No. 5 slot and fell, 6-2, 6-3. Aimee Tarun was last on the singles lineup, and was overcome by Northwestern’s Jillian Rooney, 7-5, 6-1.
Iowa returns to action on Sunday as they travel to Champaign, Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini. Action will begin at 12 p.m. (CT).
