IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team finished up day one at the Purdue Invitational on Friday.
Each of Iowa’s two doubles earned a win on opening day. Zoe Douglas and Natalie Looney won 6-3 over Shteyn and Shapovalova of Miami University, and Adorabol Huckleby and Aimee Tarun won 6-4 over Mountford and Roberts of Notre Dame.
“Big improvements today from last weekend in both singles and doubles,” said UI head coach Katie Dougherty. “Play was moved indoors all day due to wind and these four did a great job being prepared after long delays. Our level was higher and focus was where it needed to be. It was a good day overall for us”
Huckleby, Douglas, and Tarun also saw wins in their singles matches on Friday afternoon. Huckleby won her first round match over Tara McElroy of Memphis, 6-2, 6-2. Tarun won 7-5, 6-2 over Anastasia Vasyukhin of Miami University, and Douglas defeated Jade Hilton of Illinois 6-3, 6-4 in her singles match.
“I’m proud of the team and how everyone competed today,” said Tarun “I was really pleased with how I played and how well I executed my game plan. There were big improvements from last weekend for everyone, and we are all getting better in every match we play.”
Tournament action will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. (ET).
