Clark Named Mike Howard Most Valuable Wrestler

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Cory Clark was named Mike Howard Most Valuable Wrestler at the Hawkeyes’ annual awards banquet March 25 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Clark won a Big Ten title and placed runner-up at the 2016 NCAA Championships at 133 pounds. He finished the season with a 26-2 record, scoring bonus points in 12 wins and notching 10 wins against ranked opponents.

Clark was one of six Hawkeyes presented an All-America award. He was joined by senior Nathan Burak, juniors Sammy Brooks, Thomas Gilman and Alex Meyer, and sophomore Brandon Sorensen.

The All-America honors were the third for both Clark and Burak. Gilman and Sorensen are now two-time All-Americans, and Brooks and Meyer earned their first career All-America honors.

Burak was the recipient of the J. Donald Pike Award, presented to the Hawkeye senior with the highest grade point average. He also shared the John and Dorothy Sill Award for most dedicated wrestler with Gilman.

Gilman and redshirt freshman Sam Stoll were presented awards for most pins; both wrestlers finished the season with 10 falls. Stoll was also presented the award for Most Improved, and the Mike J. McGivern Award for most courageous.

The Coaches Appreciation Award was presented to seniors Jake Kadel and Patrick Rhoads.

The Hawkeyes finished the 2015-16 season with a Big Ten regular season title, two individual Big Ten champions, six All-Americans, and 10 academic All-Big Ten honorees.
