COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Two goals by the University of Iowa soccer team’s top scorer’s propelled the Hawkeyes to a 2-0 victory over Maryland on Friday afternoon at Ludwig Field.

“I am very proud of our team’s performance today,” said UI head coach Dave DiIanni. “We asked them to commit to a game plan and do it for 90 minutes both offensively and defensively and that’s what they did.”

Senior Bri Toelle’s goal in the 24th minute off an assist from Karly Stuenkel on the right side of the box gave Iowa momentum heading into the second half. The goal was Toelle’s sixth of the season.

The Hawkeyes capitalized and extended their lead in the 83rd minute after Stuenkel slipped the ball past the goalkeeper, giving Iowa a 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes left in the match. The goal was Stuenkel’s fifth of the season.

Iowa outshot Maryland by a margin of 13-7. Goalkeeper Claire Graves played all 90 minutes between the post for Iowa, making two saves.

The 2-0 victory over Maryland marks Iowa’s fourth shutout of the season, one of those coming against fellow Big Ten foe Purdue last month.

“Early on in the game we created some high-quality chances that we weren’t able to capitalize on and instead dropping off we pushed for more,” said DiIanni. “I think it was integral for us to fight all game for each other to get the result.”

The Hawkeyes (8-10-0, 2-8-0) return to action against Nebraska on Wednesday for their season finale. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. (CT) in Lincoln.
