IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa Student-Athlete Academic Services has recognized senior Thomas Gilman (Wrestling) and junior Melissa Zurawski (Women’s Gymnastics) as February’s male and female student-athletes of the month.
This honor, voted by their peers, recognizes student-athletes who have excelled not only in their sport, but in the classroom as well.
Gilman, a history major, was undefeated in the month of February going 5-0 with two pins and two major decisions. Three of his five victories came over top 10 opponents. Gilman won his first Big Ten Championship on March 5, defeating Nebraska’s Tim Lambert, 4-0, to claim the 125-pound title.
Zurawski is a health and human physiology major. She earned Big Ten Gymnasts of the Week honors on Jan. 30 after Iowa defeated Maryland to claim the team’s first Gymnast of the Week honor since 2010. Zurawski holds the team’s season high on uneven bars with a 9.925 to tie for third-best in program history.
The Iowa wrestling team returns to the mat for the NCAA Championships. The meet runs March 16-18 in St. Louis, Missouri.
The GymHawks are back in action Saturday, March 11, hosting the Big Five meet inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The meet is set to start at 3:06 p.m.
