ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell to No. 9 Michigan, 4-3, Saturday in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Hawkeyes are now 15-7 (4-5).
“Today was a hard fought match, it was tough to come up short,” said UI head coach Sash Schmid. “We can take a lot away from this match, and get ready to finish strong the rest of way.”
The Hawkeyes started the match winning the doubles point. The No. 1 pairing of freshman Elise van Heuvelen and sophomore Adorabol Huckleby defeated Brienne Minior and Kate Fahey, 6-1.
It came down to the No. 3 doubles position to decide which team would clinch the doubles point. Junior Montana Crawford and senior Aimee Tarun defeated Annie Wierda and Mira Ruder-Hook, 7-6, in a tiebreaker to take the doubles point.
Michigan entered the match with two athletes ranked in the ITA Singles Rankings. Junior Zoe Douglas defeated No. 24 Brienne Minor in three sets, 4-6 6-2 6-1.
Van Heuvlen fought hard, but dropped her match at the No. 1 position to No. 28 Kate Fahey in straight sets, 7-5 7-6.
Tarun was the last one off the court for the Hawkeyes. The senior was leading in the third set when Michigan decided to forfeit the match.
Iowa continues its Michigan road trip tomorrow when they face Michigan Sate at 11 a.m. (CT) in East Lansing.
