IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 2017 freestyle wrestling season continues Saturday and Sunday at the 2017 UWW University Nationals in Akron, Ohio. The two-day tournament is hosted at the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House on the campus of the University of Akron.
Thirteen University of Iowa wrestlers are registered for the freestyle tournament. The Hawkeyes’ contingent includes three-time All-American Brandon Sorensen (70 kg), who placed fifth at the event in 2015 and was runner-up in 2016. Phillip Laux (61 kg) is returning to University Nationals for the fourth time. Laux placed fifth in 2014, fourth in 2015, and sixth in 2016.
The 11 other Hawkeye representatives include Mitch Bowman (86 kg), Steven Holloway (97 kg), Matt Malcom (74 kg), Tristan McDonald (74 kg), Logan McQuillen (74 kg), Aaron Meyer (65 kg), Jeremiah Moody (74 kg), Danny Murphy (65 kg), Perez Perez (57 kg), Brock Rathbun (61 kg), and Kaleb Young (80 kg).
The following weekend the University of Iowa and Hawkeye Wrestling Club is sending nine wrestlers to Lincoln, Nebraska, to compete for positions on the United States Senior and Junior World Teams.
Paul Glynn (60 kg), Jeren Glosser (66 kg), Alex Marinelli (74 kg), and Keegan Shaw (66 kg) wrestle at the 2017 Junior World Team Trials on Friday, June 9 at the Devaney Center at the University of Nebraska. Winners from each weight class advance to Tampere, Finland, to represent Team USA at the Junior World Championships on Aug. 1-6.
On Saturday, June 10, Nathan Burak (97 kg), Chris Dardanes (61 kg), Nick Dardanes (65 kg), Thomas Gilman (57 kg), and Bobby Telford (125 kg) compete at the 2017 Senior World Team Trials. The United States world team competes at the Senior World Championships on Aug. 21-26 in Paris, France.
FloWrestling will stream the University Nationals and World Team Trials. The World Team Trials are also live on Roku and Apple TV.
