IOWA CITY, Iowa – – Former University of Iowa basketball standout Bill Logan passed away on Thursday at the age of 83. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Logan, a native of Keokuk, Iowa, is a member of the Hawkeyes’ 1,000-point Club (1,188 points) and led the team in scoring three times between, 1954-56. A two-time All-Big Ten honoree, Logan was recognized as a second team All-American his senior season in 1956. He helped Iowa to a second place Big Ten finish as a sophomore and consecutive Final Four appearances in 1955 and 1956.
Logan was a member of Iowa’s legendary “Fabulous Five” team in 1956 that ultimately finished as NCAA runners-up. Iowa won 17 straight games that season, the second-longest streak in school history. The 1955 team also reached the Final Four. Logan averaged 17.7 points and 10.3 rebounds as a senior.
In 1954, the Hawkeyes finished second in the Big Ten, then captured consecutive Big Ten championships in 1955 and 1956. The 1955 team was the first Iowa team to average over 80 points per contest and first to win an outright conference title. Logan averaged a team-best 15.9 points and 11 rebounds as a junior.
Logan’s No. 31 is retired, along with the numbers of his “Fabulous Five” teammates: Carl Cain, Sharm Scheuerman, Bill Seaberg, and Bill Schoof. He is one of nine Hawkeyes to have his uniform number/jersey retired.
He was inducted in into the Iowa Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1991, and was named a member of Iowa’s All-Century Team in 2002.
Logan was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1956, and played for one season in the National Industrial Basketball League.
