IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Brady Schanuel has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office. The honor is the first of Schanuel’s career.
The Swansea, Illinois, native received the nod after tossing seven shutout innings, allowing one hit and fanning a career-high 11 in the Hawkeyes’ 5-1 victory over No. 11 Indiana. The 11 strikeouts are the most by a Hawkeye since 2004.
Schanuel allowed a first inning single, but didn’t allow another hit over the next six frames. He walked a pair of batters in the fourth before retiring the final 10 Hoosiers he faced.
On the year, Schanuel is 4-2 with a 2.48 ERA in six starts. He has 36 strikeouts over 29 innings.
Schanuel is the first Hawkeye to receive a Big Ten Weekly honor this season.
