Bacalla, Clark, and Mannix Advance to Singles Round of 32 at ITA

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team built off their success in Day 1 by picking up seven singles and two doubles wins at the ITA Central Regional Championships on Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
 
38006Iowa captured four singles wins in the main draw Round of 128, three of which came from freshmen who made their Hawkeye debuts.  Senior Adorobol Huckleby defeated Gabrielle Goldin of Missouri, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Freshman Michelle Bacalla captured a win against Hayley Hakkenstad of Missouri in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6, (7-1). Freshman Samantha Mannix beat Ines Absisan from Nebraska-Omaha in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Freshman Sophie Clark grabbed a win against Reghan Lynch from Northern Iowa, 6-3, 7-5.
 
“I was quite nervous, but I was able to get comfortable and come out on top,” said Clark. “It was great to get my first singles win as Hawkeye and I’m looking forward to the competition tomorrow.”
 
In the Round of 64, Clark dropped Ioana Gheroghita of Kansas State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Bacalla defeated Laura Rico Garcia of Oklahoma, 6-2, 6-2, and Samantha Mannix beat Vasanti Shinde of Nebraska in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Clark, Mannix, and Bacalla, each upset seeded opponents in the Round of 64 to advance to the Round of 32, tomorrow at 10 a.m.
 
Iowa also grabbed two tie-breaker doubles wins in the Round of 32, both extending their records to 2-0. The freshman duo of Samantha Mannix and Sophie Clark defeated Tina Kreines and Annemarie Emme of Minnesota, 8-7 (14-12). Freshman Michelle Bacalla and sophomore Ashleigh Jacobs beat Ines Mesquita and Anna Turco of Kansas State, 8-7 (7-3).
 
Both teams advanced to the Round of 16 tomorrow at 9 a.m.
 
“It was a tough battle in our doubles match today,” said Mannix. “We’re new to playing with each other, but we trusted and leaned on each other. The challenge was great and I’m excited to play again tomorrow.”
