IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Alex Marinelli has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week.
Marinelli won the 165-pound title at the 2019 Big Ten Championships last weekend, defeating the No. 3 and No. 1 wrestlers in the country in the semis and finals.
His 9-3 win over Penn State’s Vincenzo Joseph was the first conference title of his career, and the 200th Big Ten individual title in school history. Marinelli is 23-0 this season and is expected to be the top seed at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 21-23.
The USA Wrestling weekly award is the second this for Marinelli. He was previously recognized Feb. 20.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
