IOWA CITY, Iowa –Three University of Iowa field hockey student-athletes — Nikki Freeman, Meghan Conroy, and Leah Zellner — were selected to compete at the 2019 Young Women’s National Championship, USA Field Hockey announced Friday.

Freeman, Conroy, and Zellner were three of nine Hawkeyes chosen from high performance training squads. Conroy, Zellner, Emily Deuell, Ciara Smith, Cat Nicholson, Grace McGuire, and Leslie Speight were a part of the Midwest high performance training squad, while Freeman and Makenna Maguire were on the New Jersey training squad.

It will be Freeman’s second appearance at the Young Women’s National Championship, and first for Conroy and Zellner. Freeman, a native of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, started 15 of 21 games for the Hawkeyes in her sophomore season. As freshmen, Conroy started 13 of 21 games and Zellner saw action in all 21 games with one goal scored.

The Young Women’s National Championship is an annual high-level, international structured tournament that is the next step on the Olympic Development Pathway. Eight teams will face off for the prestigious title of national champions and an opportunity to be selected to the 2020 U.S. U-21 Women’s National Team and U.S. Women’s National Development Team, or a trial for the U.S. Women’s National Team.

The Young Women’s National Championship will take place at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from June 14-18. Admission is free.
