IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Grant Leonard has been named a Collegiate Baseball Preseason Third-Team All-American as a relief pitcher, it was announced Tuesday by the college baseball newspaper.
The Mokena, Illinois, native earned the preseason distinction after setting a school record with 14 saves during the 2019 season.  Leonard finished the season with a 2-3 record and 3.37 ERA over 34 2/3 innings en route to second-team All-Big Ten honors.
The right-handed pitcher was named to the NCBWA Midseason Closer of the Year List in 2019 and finished his junior season ranked second in the Big Ten in saves and 10th in appearances (28).  He was a perfect 14-of-14 in save opportunities.
Leonard enters his senior season with 16 career saves, which are the fifth most in school history.
The Hawkeyes open the 2020 season at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Punta Gorda, Florida, on Feb. 14 against Kent State.
