Black Team Rallies for 4-3 Game 1 Victory

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Black team rallied from a 3-0 first-inning deficit for a 4-3 victory in game one of the University of Iowa baseball team’s Black & Gold World Series on Monday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.

The Black team leads the best of three series, 1-0.

Sophomore Michael Seegers led off the game with a solo home run and redshirt sophomore Brayden Frazier added a two-run homer in the first inning, giving the Gold team a 3-0 lead. The Gold team had two hits the rest of the way.

The Black team scored one run in the second and single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Freshman Mitch Wood had an infield single in the sixth to knock in sophomore Anthony Mangano to give the Black team its first lead.

Redshirt sophomore Peyton Williams led the Gold team, finishing 2-for-3 to collect two of the team’s five hits. The Black squad finished with six hits with Mangano going 2-for-3 with two doubles. Gehrig Christensen, Izaya Fullard, Brendan Sher and Wood all had RBIs.

Junior Adam Mazur allowed two hits and fanned four over three innings for the Gold team. Junior Luke Llewellyn allowed two hits and fanned four in two innings and Casey Day allowed two hits in the sixth.

After giving up three runs in the first, junior Benjamin DeTaeye allowed one hit over his next three frames. He fanned four in four innings before turning it over to redshirt sophomore Will Christophersen, who also fanned four over three innings of relief.

Game two of the series is set for Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3:15 p.m. (CT).
