Hawkeyes Down Mississauga, 32-1, in Fall Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball pitching staff fanned 35 batters as the Hawkeyes defeated the Mississauga Tigers, 32-1, on Thursday night at Duane Banks Field in a 15-inning exhibition.

Redshirt sophomore Zach Voelker tallied four strikeouts in an inning of work. Redshirt sophomore Keaton Anthony, redshirt junior Luke Lewellyn, freshman Cade Obermueller, sophomore Marcus Morgan, junior Jack Young and sophomore Jack Whitlock all tallied three strikeout innings. Obermueller needed only 10 pitches to strike out the side in the top of the tenth inning.

Redshirt junior Sam Hojnar led the way for the Hawkeyes at the plate going 4-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a home run to tally three RBIs. Anthony hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second to notch a team leading four RBIs.

Junior Michael Seegers was 3-for-4 on the day as eight Hawkeyes had multi-hit games (Will Mulflur, Kyle Huckstorf, Hojnar, DJ Heck, Cade Moss, Blake Guerin and Gable Mitchell) and Mulflur hit a home run.

The Hawkeyes play host to Iowa Central Community College on September 30 at 3 pm (CT). Admission is free.
