3 Hawkeyes Advance at Intercollegiate Championships

SAN DIEGO, California — The four student-athletes representing the University of Iowa women’s tennis team at the Intercollegiate Championships won a total of four singles matches to start off the weekend at the Hogan Tennis Center.

Daianne Hayashida made her collegiate debut winning both matches in the main draw singles. The freshman defeated Tanvi Narendran, the five-star recruit from Arizona, in straight sets (6-3, 7-5). She then faced Rozalia Gruszczynska of Kansas State in the Round of 32 and was victorious (6-4, 6-2) to advance to the Round of 16 on Friday.

Samantha Mannix lost her first singles match of the fall against San Diego’s Claudia De Las Heras (2-6, 2-6).

Vipasha Mehra bounced the No. 187 junior player in the world, Matilde Morais, of North Texas (6-4, 6-4) to continue the momentum of her fall season and move on to the next round of singles.

Marisa Schmidt had a solid start to her season, beating Antonia Balzert of Colorado in a three-set match (6-2, 6-7, 6-4) to move on to Friday’s Round of 16.

All four Hawkeyes will compete in day two of the tournament on Friday. Mannix/Schmidt and Hayashida/Mehra will team up in doubles play, while three will compete in singles.
