No. 5 Penn State Clips No. 4 Iowa in OT

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State’s Sophia Gladieux’s golden goal in the 62nd minute sent the fifth-ranked Nittany Lions to a 2-1 overtime victory over the fourth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team on Friday night at Penn State Field Hockey Complex.

The loss drops the Hawkeyes’ record to 9-3 overall, 3-2 in Big Ten play. All three of Iowa’s losses have come in overtime this season.

Trailing 1-0 late in the fourth quarter, the Hawkeyes took advantage of a penalty corner with six minutes left in regulation. Senior Anthe Nijziel found the back of the goal for her sixth goal of the season to tie the game following assists from sophomores Lieve Schalk and Annika Herbine.

Penn State grabbed the early lead, scoring on a backhand shot from Anna Simon in the seventh minute. It was the first goal Iowa has allowed in the first quarter this season.

OF NOTE…
– Iowa has played four overtime games this season, posting a 1-3 record. All three of Iowa’s losses have come against ranked teams.
– The loss in Happy Valley snapped Iowa’s 10-game road winning streak that dated back to last season.
– Penn State snapped an eight-game losing streak to Iowa.
– The Nittany Lions out-shot Iowa, 12-5, in the game and had a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners.
