Hawkeyes Drop Series Finale to Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The University of Iowa baseball team was defeated, 4-2, by Indiana on Sunday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field.

The Hawkeyes took a 1-0 lead in the first inning that they held till Indiana tied the game in the seventh. Iowa answered with a run in the eighth and the Hoosiers scored three in the bottom half to take the lead for good.

“Another tough loss today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Blow a lead in the eighth, don’t get a shutdown inning in the bottom half. It was a strange day. Ty Langenburg was falling behind putting guys on early in the game, but we found ways to wiggle out of it with a bunch of double plays. Defense played really well. We were living on the edge all day and it finally caught up with us.”

Keaton Anthony tallied three hits for the Hawkeyes including two doubles. Michael Seegers was 2-for-4 and Gable Mitchell was 1-for-2. Sam Hojnar had an RBI and Ben Wilmes brought in a run via an error.

Ty Langenberg got the start throwing 5 1/3 of shutout ball for the Hawkeyes. He struck out two and allowed six hits. Jacob Henderson earned the loss allowing three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

“We had opportunities,” said Heller. “They gave us some free bases and we didn’t get the clutch hit. We had some guys that struggled this weekend. It was a tough day. You get to the eighth and you get a lead, you like to think you can hold on to it. We just didn’t get the job done.”

The Hawkeyes were outhit 11-6 and left 12 runners stranded.
