Hawkeyes Start Strong at Charlotte Invite

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened the fall season by going 6-1 on the opening day of the Charlotte Invitational at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The Hawkeyes went 4-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles on the day.

In singles, Iowa notched two victories in straight sets and two matches went three sets. Freshman Chelsea Bluestein recorded a win in three sets against Kaja Jacobson of Wisconsin, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in her first collegiate match and sophomore Daianne Hayashida followed with a victory over Wisconsin’s Ariel Johnson, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

Junior Barbora Pokorna downed Wisconsin’s Ellison Reynoldson, 6-3, 6-4, and sophomore Pia Kranholdt finished singles play with another straight-set victory over the Badgers’ Ava Martin, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes went undefeated against Wisconsin. Bluestein and Hayashida downed Johnson and Reynoldson in a close match, 8-7 (7-4). Pokorna and Kranholdt wrapped up the day with an 8-6 win over Jacobson and Martin.

The Hawkeyes will continue competition on Saturday.
