Hawkeyes Continue Battle at Charlotte Invite

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team continued through day two at the Charlotte Invitational at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The Hawkeyes won three matches on the day.

In singles play, freshman Jessica Matthews went 2-1 against Charlotte and Wisconsin. Matthews defeated Shona Nakano of Charlotte, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) and she followed that match with another win against Wisconsin’s Kaja Jacobson, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 1-0 (10-6).

Daianne Hayashida fell to Charlotte’s Ruxi Schech in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Barbora Pokorna was defeated by Charlotte’s Sara Suchankova, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) and Pia Kranholdt lost her singles match to Area Teixido Garcia of Charlotte in a straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles competition, the Hawkeyes went 1-1 against Charlotte. Pokorna and Kranholdt defeated Aranda and Nakano, 7-6 (7-5). Bluestein and Hayashida lost to Schech and Suchanova, 6-3.

The Hawkeyes will finish competition on Sunday.
