LAWRENCE, Kan. — University of Iowa freshman Jessica Matthews went 1-1 in the qualifying singles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Thursday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
Matthews opened the day in Round of 128 with a straight-set win over Tuana Tinaztepe, 7-5, 6-1. In the Round of 64, Matthews battled North Dakota’s Nore Heinitz, but fell in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4. The result bounced Matthews from the singles tournament.
The Hawkeyes return to action Friday with Barbora Pokorna, Daianne Hayashida and Pia Kranholdt beginning their singles and doubles play tomorrow morning. Matthews will also return to the court for doubles competition.
Draws for both singles and doubles will be released later tonight.
