URBANDALE, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s tennis team won its third straight match, downing Iowa State, 5-2, in an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup on Friday night at Life Time Fitness.
The victory clinches an Iowa win in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, giving Iowa a 13-8 lead with two sports remaining – women’s gymnastics and softball.
The Hawkeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point with a win on court two and a forfeit at No. 3.
Iowa State’s Anna Kuearum and Isabella Dunlap secured a 6-4 victory on court one over senior Vipasha Mehra and freshman Jessica Matthews before Iowa battled back to earn the point. Junior Barbora Pokorna and Pia Kranholdt posted a 7-5 victory over Ashlee Narker and Valeska San Martin.
In singles, Iowa notched victories at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 to go along with a forfeit win at No. 6.
Pokorna started it off with a straight set win over Narker, 6-2, 7-5. Kranholdt followed on court four, winning 7-5, 6-4 and Marisa Schmidt notched the fifth point via a 10-point tiebreaker, defeating Dunlap, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3).
The Cyclones earned points with wins on No. 1 and 5.
