MINNEAPOLIS – The 62nd-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell 4-1 at Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The loss drops the Hawkeyes’ record to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in Big Ten action.
Iowa opened the day by capturing the doubles point with victories on courts one and three. Sophomore Daianne Hayashida and junior Nikita Vishwase notched their first win as a doubles duo on court three, downing Zeyneb Sarioglan and Aiva Scmhitz, 6-4.
It came down to the No. 1 and 2 spots with both courts in a tiebreaker.
On court two, junior Marisa Schmidt and sophomore Pia Kranholdt sealed the team point, while also earning their first win as a pair this season. Schmidt and Kranholdt won 7-6 (2) in the tiebreaker over Sofia Pizzoni and Sofia Pinto.
The Gophers picked up four wins in singles competition to secure the team victory.
Hayashida and Schmidt brought both of their matches to a third set. Both student-athletes posted 6-1 wins in their second set.

“Tough match for us on the road today, Minnesota fought hard. It was disappointing for us to not claw through into singles after finally winning a doubles point. I think that goes to show that every match in the Big Ten is competitive, and we just didn’t play well enough to pick up the win today.”
