MUNCIE, IN – The Iowa men’s tennis team faced strong competition, Friday and Saturday in the first two days of the Ball State Invitational. Freshman Walter Valarezo and the doubles pair of senior Matis Jasicek and freshman Alexis Lebron still remain in contention main draw titles.
Valarezo began his Hawkeye career in impressive fashion, advancing to the B Flight semifinals with wins over Toledo’s Freddy Gomez, Illinois State’s Alban Renard and Butler’s James Low. He will next face Illinois State’s Ben Pettinar for a chance to advance to the flight championship.
After a first-round bye, Jasicek and Lebron defeated Bradley’s Marke Pawlik and Northern Illinois’ Ryan Snack and Ball State’s John Gramelspacher and Mike Heule to advance to the D Flight final. The duo will next face Justin Kates and Erik Lindroos of Western Michigan in the title match.
In C Flight doubles competition, freshman Scott Elwell and sophomore Aaron Schaechterle advanced to the championship match of the consolation round with wins over Andy Balcer and Sanjeev Paramamathan of St. Louis and Andrew Reznack and Scott Roebuck of Bradley. The tandem will compete against Chris Cozad and Guillermo Gomez of Illinois State.
In other action, Lebron won the first two matches of his Hawkeye career with wins over Marquette’s Tomek Czernuszewicz and IUPUI’s Juan Mas in the D Flight main draw. He lost in the quarterfinals to Toledo’s Josh Moran. Sophomores Chaitu Malempati and Parker Ross and Jasicek each won their first-round main draw matches and were later defeated.
The final day of competition will conclude tomorrow with the semifinals and championship rounds.
