IOWA CITY – The Iowa soccer team fell to Northwestern on a cold day at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes scored the first goal of the game, but allowed three goals thereafter falling 3-1 to the Wildcats.
In the first half, Iowa and Northwestern battled as neither team could find the net. The game went into halftime tied at zero, while each team attempted five shots.
In the game’s 46th minute, Iowa senior Courtney Wilkerson got the Hawkeyes on the board when she fired an unassisted goal from 35 yards out into the upper left corner of the net. The goal was Wilkerson’s first of the season.
The Wildcats answered ten minutes later when Ashleigh Garmon beat goalkeeper Britta Vogele in the bottom left corner of the net. Tara Lipinski assisted Garmon on the goal. Northwestern scored the game-winning goal at the 65:49 mark when Lipinski sent a crosser into the box and Tabitha Lowey sent a header into the net over Vogele.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal less than five minutes later on an unassisted goal by Kristen Pearce. Pearce scored on a breakaway after Vogele left the net while going for the ball. Pearce avoided Vogele and sent the ball into the far side of the net for the goal and a 3-1 lead.
Next weekend, Iowa (3-6-1/0-3-1) will host two games at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The Hawkeyes will host Indiana on Friday and Purdue on Sunday.
