Oct. 10, 2003

MADISON, WI – The Iowa men’s tennis team got its first taste of dual competition Friday afternoon in the first day of the Wisconsin Invitational. The tournament was conducted in a mock-dual format with Iowa losing in singles competition to Wisconsin (4-3) and conference powerhouse Minnesota (6-0). The Hawkeyes also lost a doubles dual to the Badgers (3-1).

Sophomores Parker Ross and Chaitu Malempati each recorded singles victories for the Hawkeyes. Ross was a winner over Wisconsin’s Alex Contini (7-5, 7-6). Malempati defeated the Badgers’ Mark Weinig in straight sets (6-2, 7-6). Freshman Ryan Reid claimed his first collegiate victory with a win over Wisconsin’s Mike Goodman (0-6, 7-5). Freshman Aaron Schaechterle was a winner over Wisconsin’s Pete Amundson in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). His match did not count as part of Iowa’s dual score as it was played during the Hawkeyes’ dual with Minnesota.

Malempati was also victorious in doubles competition, teaming up with freshman Sebastian Delgado for an 8-6 win over Wisconsin’s Scott Green and Alex Contini.

The second day of tournament action will continue tomorrow.
