Hawkeyes Fall to No. 67 Western Michigan

The Iowa men’s tennis team faced tough competition in a 7-0 loss to 67th-ranked Western Michigan Sunday afternoon at the West Hills Athletics Club.

The Hawkeyes fell behind early after losing all three doubles contests. Iowa’s closet match came at the No. 2 position where sophomores Chaitu Malempati and Aaron Schaechterle lost a 9-8 tiebreak to Dan Grupp and Jose Orozco. In the No. 1 match, freshmen Sebastian Delgado and Walter Valarezo were defeated by Ravi Pathanjali and Jeff French, 8-5. Freshmen Jonny Hoak and Scott Elwell suffered an 8-3 loss to Tommy Dennis and Brady Crosby in the No. 3 match.

Iowa was unable to come back in singles competition losing all six contests. The Hawkeyes’ closest match of the day came in the No. 6 match where Elwell recorded a 6-3 first-set win over Justin Kates. He dropped the remaining sets, 6-3, 6-1. In the No. 1 match, Malempati was defeated by Pathanjali, 6-3, 6-3. Delgado lost his No. 2 match to Dennis, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 3 match, Hoak fell to Orozco, 6-1, 6-1. Valarezo lost 6-4, 6-4 to Crosby in the No. 4 match. In the No. 5 match, Schaechterle was defeated by Erik Lindroos, 6-4, 6-0.

Iowa (0-3, 0-1) will return home to face DePaul next Sunday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Recreation Building.
