March 21, 2004

MOBILE, AL – The Iowa men’s tennis team lost the third and final dual of its spring trip with a 4-3 loss to Troy State Sunday morning at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. The loss drops Iowa to 3-8 on the season.

For the third time this season the Hawkeyes were able to claim the doubles point winning two-of-three contests. In the No. 1 match, sophomore Chaitu Malempati and freshman Sebastian Delgado recorded their first dual victory with a 9-8 tiebreak win over Irving Morales and Robert van Swelm. In the No. 3 match, sophomore Aaron Schaechterle and senior Matis Jasicek notched their second win of the season with a 9-7 victory over Clayton Langheim and Charles van Swelm.

The Hawkeyes tried to keep the momentum rolling into singles competition, but their efforts came up short as they were only able to claim two singles victories. Iowa suffered a crucial blow in the No. 2 match when Delgado was forced to retire against Emir Basic due to injury to give Troy State its first point. The Trojans were able to clinch the match after Malempati (No.1), Valarezo (No. 3) and Elwell (No. 5) each suffered losses. In the No. 4 match, Schaechterle won the first set over Charles van Swelm, 6-4. After a 7-6 tiebreak loss in the second set, he rallied to win a 10-7 pro set. The victory gives Schaechterle a team-best four dual victories on the season. After a 6-1 loss to Langheim in the first set of the No. 6 match, Jasicek rallied to win the second set, 6-4 and a 10-5 pro set.

Iowa (3-8, 0-2) will return to action Saturday when it hosts 57th-ranked Purdue. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Recreation Building.
