IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team lost its third conference dual of the season in a 6-1 loss to Purdue Saturday afternoon at the Klotz Tennis Courts.

Due to threatening weather, singles competition was played first. Purdue claimed the first point of the day after Scott Elwell suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Eric Hodgman in the No. 6 match. In the No. 1 match, sophomore Chaitu Malempati lost a 6-3, 6-1 contest to Paul Rose. In the No. 4 match, freshman Jonny Hoak took and early lead in the first set but was later defeated by David Robinson, 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Walter Valarezo lost his No. 3 match to Sounak Chatterjee, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 5 match, senior Matis Jasicek took control early with a 6-1 first-set thumping over Colin Foster. Foster then rallied to win the second set, 6-2, and edged Jasicek out in a 7-6 tiebreak. Iowa claimed its first point of the day in the No. 2 match where freshman Sebastian Delgado rallied from a 7-5 first-set loss to defeat Troy Havens, 6-4, in the second set and 10-2 in a third pro set.

The weather allowed the match to be completed with doubles action. In the No. 3 match Jasicek and Elwell were defeated by Chatterjee and Filip Koziell, 8-1. Hoak and Valarezo lost their No. 2 match to Rose and Warner, 8-3. In the No. 1 match, Malempati and Delgado fell to Havens and Robinson, 8-5.

“We were outplayed by a very good Big Ten team today,” said Iowa Head Coach Steve Houghton.
